Cheltenham Festivals has taken steps to develop its outreach and education programme to a much wider section of the community and to work specifically with young people who may be disadvantaged.

In 2014, the Hitchins Family Trust made a grant to support a new project run collaboratively with Cheltenham Festivals and First Story. The project’s aim was to foster creativity, literacy and confidence among young people in secondary schools and placed acclaimed writers in schools to work on a weekly basis with pupils towards producing an anthology of their work at the 2015 Festival.
Rhiannon, a pupil from All Saints’ Academy, took part in the project at the Lit Fest in 2015/16 and became a student journalist at the event. She has been offered a place to read history at Balliol College, Oxford and is the first person from her school to go to Oxford University. Rhiannon said that her experience of the project and being at the Festivals gave her something to talk about in her interview.
Rhiannon’s contributing articles for the October 2016 Lit Fest can be found on the All Saints Academy website here
